In 2018, C-10 launched the
Business Allies Program. If you live and do business in the vicinity of Seabrook, you have a special stake in ensuring that the Seacoast region remains safe and livable for generations to come. By becoming a Business Ally, you can show your clients and your neighbors that you support C-10’s scientific and credible approach toward monitoring, research, and public education.
C-10 Research and Education Foundation, Inc. (C-10)
works for the health and safety of people and the natural environment surrounding the Seabrook Station nuclear plant. We’ve been doing this important work since our founding in 1991, soon after the nuclear plant began commercial operations. C-10 stands for “Citizens within the ten-mile radius”—the emergency planning zone surrounding Seabrook Station— home to approximately 160,000 residents across two states and 23 cities and towns.
C-10’s core service is to operate a real-time radiological monitoring network
in the communities surrounding the plant, which we do under contract with the Massachusetts Department of Health. We measure beta and gamma radiation, as well as wind speed and direction. This information helps officials track permitted releases, and could help protect the public in the event of an accident at Seabrook.
In addition to radiological monitoring, we act as safety watchdogs.
C-10 tracks regulatory filings, reports and other correspondence relative to safety and security at Seabrook—calling for greater transparency and stronger oversight by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) as appropriate.
While Seabrook Station is a major contributor to the region’s electric grid and economy, it’s important to understand that the risk of an accident, however small, is real. Business owners, just as homeowners, cannot buy insurance protection for loss due to a nuclear accident. Seabrook has been relicensed to operate until 2050, despite serious concerns with degraded concrete at the plant. That’s why our region needs an independent voice for safety—now, and in the future. C-10 relies on a public-private partnership to keep doing our critically important work of monitoring, research and education. Will you stand with C-10?
